The terms Drink Hostess, Hostess Club, and Champagne Girl are English expressions used in various countries around the world to describe women who perform this type of work. In Italy, however, they are known as “Figuranti di Sala.”
The origin of this term dates back to the golden age of Italian night clubs, when a well-known theatrical impresario needed to make a contractual distinction between dancers and those who worked as entertainers within the venue.
At that time, Italian night clubs mainly employed dancers from Eastern Europe, France, and England. These performers would put on their shows every evening and, during the remaining time, entertain guests at the tables by talking, drinking, and dancing with them. To avoid confusion between the two professional roles, it became necessary to introduce a specific term that clearly distinguished them.
How the Job Works (Part 1)
The role of a Figurante di Sala, or Drink Hostess, requires strong interpersonal skills, friendliness, and initiative. She should have an attractive appearance, a cheerful attitude, and an elegant style, as her main task is to entertain guests and encourage them to stay in the venue for as long as possible. Clients pay for the time spent with the Drink Hostess through what is known as a “consumption,” which usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the venue’s policies.
Interaction with Clients
Guests seek different types of interaction with Drink Hostesses: some enjoy light flirting, others like to dance, while some simply prefer to talk and have a drink together. Payment is based on the time spent with the hostess and on the drinks ordered, which can range from simple beverages to non-alcoholic cocktails or bottles of champagne.
Availability and Requirements
Availability is generally required for six evenings per week, with an obligation to maintain an elegant and sensual appearance. The job is open to candidates of all nationalities. Applicants from outside the European Union must hold a valid residence permit.

Some people describe these venues as hybrids. Those who look back to the past may say they are no longer what they once were. We prefer a more realistic perspective: venues evolve and adapt to the demands of their customers, following the same trend seen in all industries. Even when lap dance first appeared, time-based drink consumption did not exist as it does today.
The Three Types of Night Clubs
We can identify three main types of night clubs:
Night clubs without private rooms: the work is carried out exactly as previously described, with no private areas.
Night clubs with optional private rooms: both drink consumption and private dances are available upon request, leaving the choice to the hostess.
